The evening of our 4th day. Joshua Tree National Park is east of LA. Driving into the park, the unique Joshua trees first caught our eyes. Then, suddenly almost in the middle of no where stood all these huge rocks. Here is a long exposure shot of the Arch Rock tinted by the sunset orange and purple.

It was the second last night of our trip. The sky didn't open up till the very moment we stood on this little hill. Ocean, the evening blue and the red bridge together were just breathtaking.

Mobius Arch and Mt Whitney

 <img src="http://www.kinesiologene.net/blog/pp/thumbnails/thumb_20100315004129_mar_2010_16.jpg"><br/>
It was the morning of the 6th day. The plan was to shoot the scene when the orange light from sunrise painted both the arch and Mt. Whitney behind. It didn't happen. Waking up at 6 I realized it was so cloudy that I couldn't even tell where the sun was. I still decided to hike to the arch betting maybe there was a chance. Standing in front this giant yellow and red-ish arch with the morning dark blue behind it, I changed my mind to use a yellow filter for a black/white shot. And, here is the outcome. Now I think back, if the sky was clear, there would be strong shadow under the arch which might distract the eyes a lot. I was very lucky.

Zabriskie Point in Death Valley

 <img src="http://www.kinesiologene.net/blog/pp/thumbnails/thumb_20100314225805_mar_2010_18.jpg"><br/>
The various colors of rock in Death Valley were very fascinating. These colors are caused by the oxidation of different metals (red, pink and yellow is from iron salts, green is from decomposing tuff-derived mica, and manganese produces the purple). The tiny layer of white on top was salts rather than snow.

Walt Disney Concert Hall

The 10-day trip to California was eye opening. We traveled along the coast from San Fran to LA, then to Joshua Tree National Park, Lone Pine, Death Valley, Mono Lake, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Napa Valley then back to SFO. The landscape is very diverse. We were driving from desert into snow within hours. SFO and LA are lively, and full of culture. It was a relatively short trip for the number of spots we visited, but I finished almost 4 rolls of film. Here is a shot of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA - an amazing piece of work by Frank Gehry.
